WHAT HAPPENS IN A SINGING LESSON?

Voice Assessment

During the first singing lesson I will give you detailed information on your range, the overall functionality of your voice and your musicality. All this, making sure that all you do when you sing keeps you healthy and lets you have fun without any issue.

This will be done with a simple exercise and singing a section of a song, so that we can both get an idea of what areas to work on first.

I would also be beneficial to know a little bit about your background and goals, so feel free to let me know about them when you book your first lesson!

Warm Ups + Technical Exercices

At the beginning of the singing lesson we will usually warm up your voice to make sure you are ready to sing without any danger for your vocal health.

We will then use some technical exercises designed just for your voice, to train the parts of your voice (vocal folds, larynx, muscles…) that you may need to work with to improve the overall quality and tone of your voice. These exercises are great for making adjustments to your muscle memory and over time will help to coordinate your voice.

Singing!

After the technique, the fun! We will work on a song. Sometimes we’ll look at the whole song, some others we will work on the most difficult sections, or the parts that you find most challenging and usually refer back to some of the exercises that we’ve just used to train your voice to be able to work smoothly in the song.

You can sing a song that you choose (something you have been working on and find challenging), or I can suggest something that might be useful to improve your voice or expand your repertoire of genres. Up to you!

WHAT CAN I SING?

Anything you like! If you are just beginning, try to have an idea of something you might want to learn to sing, or something you are having difficulties singing. If you really don’t know where to start, I can give you some suggestions, but it would be preferable to start with something you like and know comfortably. For in person lesson, if you can, please bring the sheet music to the songs you’d like to work on in your lesson. If you don’t know where to find them, we can get it during your lesson, but it does take up valuable time that could be used to sing. Alternatively we can use backing tracks (or karaoke tracks) that you can easily find on YouTube for most songs.

VOCAL COACHING OR SINGING LESSONS?

The difference is minimal. I am the same person and work with the same tools, but generally a singing lesson focuses more on technique and finding a healthy and balanced voice, learning to expand your range, hit high notes, release tension etc. Singing lessons are for any levels, from beginners to advanced singers. Vocal coaching is more experienced singers and performers who are ready to take the stage and improve their overall style. They may already have a good level of singing and not need a lot of technical exercises to discover their own voice, but they need help to improve their style and performance. This is not set in stone though! A singing lesson can turn into a vocal coaching session very easily, and viceversa. It all depends on what you need when you come to me!
